The gear performed flawlessly. I have an Orvis Reel & a Finn-nor reel
of this size or larger, as well as others over the years and I can say
in all honestly that yours is the smoothest and has the best drag. It is
amusing in the ads for 2-4-6 wt lines how they crow about their drags.
Come on, in this size, the drag usually doesn't make any difference at
all and the reel is just something to hold the line. When you get over
6 wt line the reel and drag are critical and yours is the smoothest. The
rod was great also, maybe it's a matter of taste, but I like how yours
feels over my faster Sages & Orvises (Orvi ?). Fishing for Chinooks
during the run is difficult as the fish are not interested in eating,
their mind is on mating. The only way they will bite is to get the fly right
in front of them and hope they will bite out of instinct, not out of
hunger. You need a rod which is very accurate and light as many many casts are
required.
I was fishing in the Milwaukee River in Kletzsch Park, one of the many
Milwaukee county parks. The fish pictured is a Chinook, after the
Chinook make their run, the cohos follow, then the steelhead who
will continue thru the winter into spring. Mixed in during all the
runs, but in smaller numbers are the brown trout. Also in the Milwaukee River
in the park are walleye and smallmouth bass which sometimes will hit the salmon flies.
